Thomas is Healed

We started this blog to share our journey to heal Thomas's heart.
His heart is now whole, and we must begin the process of healing our own broken hearts.

Dear Thomas,
You are now perfectly healed and safe in the arms of Jesus.

You are so precious, and so loved.  We wanted you so badly, and were so excited for you.  We are so thankful for the fourteen days we had with you.  They were such a blessing....such a gift. You were such a little fighter.  You taught us to take nothing for granted.  You brought us to our knees in prayer and closer to God.  Those fourteen days were so hard, but so wonderful because they were with you.   We wouldn't trade them for anything.

You will never know pain or fear, and what you are experiencing now is more wonderful than we can imagine.   We are thankful for the promise that we will see you and hold you again in heaven.

While our arms are empty, we know you are being held by someone who loves you more than we do.   Your daddy and I are being comforted by a God who knows what it is like to lose a son....only He gave His Son freely for us, and for you my sweet baby.

You were fearfully and wonderfully made, and God knew each of the days of your life before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:14, 16 NIV).  We are so thankful that God made you for us, and trusted you with us.  You touched more people in your two weeks than most people do in their whole lives.  We are so proud of you, and so proud to be your parents. We know that our suffering was not in vain.  Your precious life will live on in our hearts, and in the hearts of so many others. You are leaving quite a legacy.

Our lives will never be the same because of the time we spent with you, sweet Thomas. We miss you so much already.

We'll love you forever, we'll like you for always....as long as we're living, our baby you'll be!

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
(2 Timothy 4:7 NIV)

  2. Melissa,
Your faith is such an inspiration to me and so many others. You are right that Thomas has left a legacy and has touched more people in his short life than most people do in a long life-time. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss, and please know that I am praying constantly for you and TJ. Ps. 30:5 "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." I pray your night is short and the morning comes quickly.

  5. Oh Melissa. I can hardly see for the tears overflowing my eyes. What a beautiful soul you have to be able to write this. You are so right; Thomas touched so many lives. Our friends and relatives prayerfully followed your story and were heartbroken when they heard that Thomas died. We will never have a Thanksgiving again without thinking of your sweet baby.

  6. Dr. Behm I have no words to say that seem appropriate. Please know that I feel honored to have been able to follow Thomas' journey these past few weeks. I have offered prayers up constantly for Thomas, you, and TJ. I know he is in the arms of God and will forever be your guardian angel. I pray for your strength and faith in the coming days and months and just know we are thinking of you.

  8. Sweet Thomas will always be in my heart. He was a tough little guy. He was so lucky to have you two as parents...even if only for a little while. You are forever in my prayers. I know Thomas is healthy now but it's so hard to fight back the tears. You two are so strong. Please know the Carver family is always thinking and praying for you. We love you Dr. Behm.

  9. Melissa, this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read. How you can compose a coherent sentence at this time is beyond me--you are truly an inspiration. You are right, Thomas has touched more people in two weeks than many do in a lifetime. I can only hope to leave half the legacy that he has.

I was once told by a friend who lost a child decades ago that you never get over it but you learn to live with it. I know that one day your ability to live with such a loss will be an inspiration to others who will travel the same unfortunate path you've trodden.

You are a wonderful mother and a remarkable person.

    Love,

    Ashley K.

We are crying tears with you, praying for you as often as we think of you (which is all day long), and sending many hugs your way. 13. Melissa and TJ - Your grace during the last two weeks has been incredible. I have prayed for you, wept for you, been humbled by you. It can be so hard to try to understand God's ways, but you are so wise to know that He has healed Thomas in His way, even if it brings you great pain. I will continue to pray that He mend your broken hearts until you can hold your sweet baby again. Thank you for sharing with us. In his short life, Thomas has touched so many others... may we all be inspired to love more deeply and to treasure the little blessings because of him. May the grace and peace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, be with you always. Love, Gayle Bates

Thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of this journey with your family. Thomas would be so proud of how strong you have both been through all of this. He is resting with God and you will all be together again some day. You will have an angel forever watching over you in Thomas. Words cannot express the sorrow we feel for you both. 16. What a beautiful letter to a beautiful son and what a God-honoring perspective you have -- even in the midst of tremendous sorrow and grief. What a blessing Thomas will always be to you. His life will forever mark yours, and you will continue to grow closer to God because of your precious son. And what a light Thomas is for Jesus. You are shining that light so brightly. It's truly beautiful to see. I am thanking God for Thomas's life and for the fullness of life he is now experiencing with Jesus. And I am praying for you like crazy.

  17. Melissa,
As I have said previously, the grace that you have shown throughout the past couple of weeks has humbled me while inspiring me to shine for our Savior. Now more than ever, as you wrote such an eloquent post for Thomas, I see grace. I can't begin to imagine the emotions that you guys are dealing with but I am so thankful to know that God can calm those emotions and wrap His loving arms around you. As many others have written I know that God chose you and TJ as Thomas' parents and Thomas was blessed to have you. I'm sure you've heard the song but if not, when you get a moment listen to Laura Story's song "Blessings". Over the past two weeks every time I hear that song it has brought my thoughts to your precious family. Logan and I cried together this afternoon as we listened to it and prayed for you and TJ. When the song says "what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise", as a believer I have to say that even when we don't see it, God is showing us mercy. I am proud to call you my sister in Christ and rejoice with you in God's promise of you holding Thomas again in Heaven. Love, Stephanie King (& Logan)

  18. I am & will continue to pray for you & TJ. The great paradox of the Chrisitan life we lead is we can rejoice in Thomas's wholeness, but grieve for the hole he left in your lives. Been looking for the perfect verse. None seem quite appropriate. I keep coming back to 1 Thessalonians 4:13 & the assurance that we do not "grieve like the rest of men who have no hope." Cling to your Hope....

  19. I do not know when I have been touched so deeply after reading your letter to Thomas. Your words are heartfelt and strengthening. They are beautiful, soul and spirit reaching words that could only be written by a heart filled with love for your little Thomas and the love of Christ, the foundation of your faith.
You and your family continue to be in my prayers. You are an inspiration to anyone that has been blessed to know your story.
May God comfort you and keep you, as only He can.

  20. Melissa,

What a beautiful letter to your sweet precious son. You are so correct in saying that he has touched so many lives in his short time here on earth. I have prayed for that sweet baby from the day that you shared your blog and I will continue to pray for you and your husband as your hearts heal. You are an AMAZING person and you have truly been an inspiration to me throughout all of this. Thank you for allowing us all to follow this journey with you and for letting us all be a part of Thomas's life. Much love and many prayers now and in the coming days ahead. May God wrap HIS loving arms around you and give you the strength that only HE can give you.

  21. So sorry for you all. I know this may be too to hard to talk about, but what went wrong? I mean I read the whole blog , several times a day, and its just hard to wrap your head around. If you don't feel like sharing, I can completely understand, but for some reason this is hard for me & others to understand.

  23. I came across your blog from another mother who has lost their precious child...and I am so, so sorry for your loss. Yesterday would have been my son's 2nd birthday...he died the day after he was born and my world has not been the same.

I can say, though, that His Grace is Suffiecient. It may feel far some days, and you may wonder how you will get through the next breath, but two years later, I can honestly and truly say that when people ask how I've survived, it's so easy to say "God's Grace."

Two songs come to mind...Natalie Grant's Held and JJ Heller's Your Hands. They both ring true--when the sacred is torn from our lives, we are held...in His hands...and never alone.

God bless you. I will pray for you tonight and in days and weeks and to come as I know all too well the emotions you will be going through...but grateful for the promise of eternity and the Truth of knowing we are His and He is ours.
    Again, I am so sorry.

  44. Found this verses this morning: 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
"That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present trials are small [know it doesn't fell that way] and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them all and will last forever. So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever."

Prayed for you many times during the night and so far this morning.

Isaiah 49:16 says that we are engraved on the palm of God's hand.

Since June God has led me to pray for you claiming that "He was holding you all in the palm of His Hand."

He was and He still is! The God of all creation, the God who humbled himself to come to earth as a baby to die for our sins, the God who will one day restore all creation is certainly a Big Enough God to be holding you, T.J. and Thomas together in the Palm of His Hand even now and forever!

    With deep love and admiration,
    Debbie

  76. Dr. Behm- You have no idea what a testimony for the Lord this blog has been. Your love for Thomas, your family and Jesus Christ has been so truly revealed through each and every word He has placed on your heart. Your precious entry that Thomas is Healed could have only been guided by the Holy Spirit as He helps you find beauty from ashes. God placed Thomas in your care and family as part of His almighty plan, and He will bless your obedience and submission. We are so thankful to have you for a doctor. 79. From a Mommy who has given up 2 children to their Heavenly home I can say with certainty that even though the pain is a huge hole and your heart is forever torn into, Gods grace, love, peace and comfort can fill it to complete. It is like a balm of soothing ointment that allows you to make it for just a few more hours... one hour at a time... Our God is so incredible. He made us and all of our emotions and feelings, He gave them to us! and He is big enough to hear our upsetness. He is close to the broken hearted, He holds us in His mighty arms when we feel we can't go on... Experience it as it comes; all the feelings, and then give them back to God, He will hold them for you. Melissa, it is something you will not get over but you will be held through it and suddenly you will realize that the days continue... and NEVER will your sweet boy be forgotten... those tiny feet, skinny little legs... and atrocious booties will be remembered. His precious spirit will always be close at heart! God bless you and keep you... you are not alone!

" The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are
    crushed is spirit" Psalms 34:18

" ...the Lord's unfailing love surrounds the man who trusts in Him"
    Psalms 32: 10b

May God sustain you both along the road ahead for you.

  81. Melissa and TJ,
Thank you so much for sharing your journey with Thomas. Although it has been years since I have seen you both, it has been a way to feel connected to you and support you. I am inspired by the love you have for Thomas and the hope your faith brings. It is a reminder to me that with love comes suffering, but God brings us hope in the midst of it all.

You are amazing people! To see God's healing hand in all of this is truly a grace. Praying that God will comfort and heal your hearts! Melissa, I pray that God will give you the grace to continue to share your heart with the many parents and children you help as a pediatrician.

    With much love,

I don't know you well but am a patient of Melissa's. In reading your posts I have cried along with you and my heart is broken for you. But Thomas and the both of you have inspired me to no end. I admire you all for your strength, courage, and most of all, your faith. You have kept your eye on God and His plan for you as well as Thomas. You're exactly right that Thomas is in a better place now than we can imagine, and you will spend eternity holding and loving him - no question. Words cannot express how sorry I am for you both. Melissa you have cared so well for my son, Gil, and we think so highly of you. We will continue to pray for all three of you.

    Warmly,

    Lindsay Thomas

  86. You said it well, sweet mother. Having lost our 3 year old 31 years ago, I can attest to the fact that grief never leaves entirely. The memory of the day she went home to be with the Lord will hit me by surprise like a Mack truck, and I will be right back there. But His Grace is sufficient, and He is love, and life goes back to normal. We live to be reunited with Him and all those who have gone before. And it will be so sweet.

My children are patients of Dr. Stone's, but we met you once in the office, I believe the week before you left to have Thomas. I have been following your blog nearly daily, and the grace and strength that has come through in your posts is simply inspirational. My heart is so saddened by the loss of your baby boy. Please know that you and your family are in my prayers as you move forward through this journey. God Bless.

  94. What a beautiful letter to your little boy, Melissa! I have no doubt that Jesus Himself has read it to Thomas, as He cradles your precious little one in His loving arms... tears in His eyes for the pain in the hearts of those left behind. It isn't the first time that a tiny baby has had such an unbelievable impact of love on so many people.... Jesus knows.
Sending you prayers and so much love,

  95. The letter to your strong and brave baby boy seems as if it comes from someone who majored in literature, not medicine. The unbelievable quality of care you provide to our community's own children pales in comparison to the perfect mothering instincts and love you showed during this most tying time with your baby boy. The thoroughness and deepness of your love and care was absolutely felt and helped comfort him while on earth. You will be with him again in time.

  96. Dear Melissa and TJ,
I don't know either of you. I found your blog on Abbie McCullough's Facebook page. I just began reading it tonight and am so sorry that I did not start earlier or else I would have been praying for you these last couple of weeks. I can't tell you how sad I am for you but your faith is simply amazing. May God hold your hands through this unimaginably difficult time and help you find peace as you mourn your tiny angel. I will keep your family in my prayers.

  99. Melissa, My heart breaks for you, but I totally understand how precious even days can be with your child. I am so very proud to call you a friend, but am heartbroken that you now join the "Angel Mommies". It will be the the title that you will be proudest of in your life. Being "Isaac's Mommy" has taught me so many lessons! As the song says... There is no sudden healing... but this is what it is to be held.... God's palm is mighty and you're resting in it. Thank you so much for being so very good to us when we were letting our Angel go... for shedding tears with us.... now as I write this I am shedding them for you... but not for Thomas, as he is perfect now and in a perfect place. I love you!!!
    Love, Megan Bush

    Melissa and TJ,
We were so greatly saddened to hear about your loss. I don't think I have ever witnessed such an unyielding strength and faith in God. While Thomas was only with you both for a brief time, know that God gave him the most loving, courageous, faithful and strong parents and he was so very blessed to have you both. You are in our thoughts and prayers during this unimaginably difficult time and we love you! Even though Dan and I are all the way up in NJ, please do not hesitate to let us know if there is anything we can do for you and TJ. My parents aren't that far away and are there if you need anything.
    Love,
